March Doll of the Month

Each month we feature a different member of our organization.  Our Doll of the Month for March 2015:
SELENE V
 Mod Dolls 337
Name: Annamaria Farkas
Doll name: Selene V, I`m the Head Doll, Treasurer and Designer of the UK Chapter, mentor of the Aussie chapter and Social Media Chair for The Modified Dolls.

Location: Plymouth, Devon, UK

Occupation: Support Officer (I`m working with individuals with mental health issues and learning disabilities), I have an MS in Special Needs Teaching and currently studying for a BA in Criminology and Psychology at Plymouth University (in my final year).

When&why did you become a Doll:
I joined TMD in December 2011 and became a full member in February 2012. I have been judged based on my appearance since I was a teenager, I was a Goth, then started to getting tattoos, coloured my hair, etc., which was frowned up on in Mid-Eastern Europe (Hungary is my original home country). Even though I graduated as a Special Needs Teacher with high marks, I was asked to cover my tattoos and possibly change my appearance at the school where I used to work. I always spoke up for people who were ‘different’ than the masses. I also supported charities and people and animals in need since I was young. Since I went to school, I gave away my packed lunch for stray dogs and I even adopted a few…that came to a point though when my mum said we can’t possibly have more dogs, so I tried to find good homes for those I couldn’t keep. I also gave away my old clothes to the Red Cross and always helped others when I could, since I was 6-7 years old. The mission statement of Modified Dolls appealed to me and quite fit to my personality.

Info about our chapter:
The UK Dolls currently have 9 members, 1 of them lives in Ireland. Since I joined the UK Dolls we have had many up and downs, with Dolls living far away from each other and some issues of organizing fundraiser events. However, I think we always had a strong base of few very committed ladies, who work hard to support the charities and keep our group together. Although we had a bumpy road behind us, I think 2015 will be an exciting year for the UK Chapter: we are organizing a few awesome fundraiser events, we were invited to attend Exeter`s first tattoo convention, we published our Cookbook in aid of charities on Magcloud, also had a few positive replies from magazines to be published and spread awareness on the mission of TMD and our supported charities!
I also mentor the Aussie chapter, which is rebuilding currently and we have 1 full Aussie Doll, who is a lovely lady and tries her best to raise awareness for TMD and our charity of the month.

What I like to do for fun:

I love going out to see bands and to festivals (I usually listen to rock and metal music), try to take my 2 adopted puppies out when I can for long walks and drives with my boyfriend and see my friends. I live 2000 miles away from my family and hometown, I usually visit them once a year, when I travel across half Europe to see my loved ones. I don`t have much free time with full time work, university and volunteering, but when I got a chance I`m either out and about or watching my favourite movies (great fan of horrors and sci-fi)! 🙂

March 2015 Charity of the Month – National MS Society

Each month, The Modified Dolls and our Official Chapters support a different 501(c)(3) organization through fundraising, voluntarism, and raising awareness. All of March, we are supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

National MS Society

Multiple Sclerosis means ‘many scars’. In MS patients, the immune system has an abnormal response that is directed toward the central nervous system, made up of the brain, spinal chord, and optic nerves. The immune system attacks myelin, which is the fatty substance surrounding nerve fibers. When the myelin or nerve fibers become damaged, signals become distorted or interrupted, causing the symptoms of MS. The damaged myelin forms scars, which gives Multiple Sclerosis its name.

There are four types of MS: Relapsing-remitting, secondary-progressive, primary-progressive, and progressive-relapsing. Relapsing-remitting is the most common type of MS and most people with relapsing-remitting MS will eventually transition to secondary-progressive.

MS symptoms vary for each patient. Those afflicted may experience severe fatigue, numbness and tingling, spasticity, walking difficulties, and vision problems, among many other symptoms.

The National MS Society works to create a world free of Multiple Sclerosis. Through professional education, advocacy, research, and programs and services for those with MS, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society strives to keep each person with MS moving. Please visit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s website or Facebook page for more information. Also, visit our website and Central Organization’s Facebook page to find events in your area that support the Society.

Pennsylvania Doll, Thirteen, lost her very best friend. Fester was a bull terrier who had been with Thirteen for nearly two decades. She and Fester did everything together and had a bond most people don’t have the pleasure of experiencing. Fester was not just a dog, but a savior to many. He had the pleasure of meeting children from tough situations, who found solace in him, since he was also from a tough situation.  Thirteen may have saved Fester from being put down so many years ago, but she had made it apparent that they very much saved each other. Thirteen is an amazing tattoo artist and will be doing $50 flash art at her Manheim, PA tattoo studio.  Proceeds will benefit the Blue Ridge Bull Terrier Rescue in honor and remembrance of her very best friend.

March 2015 Letter From the President

Dear friends, fans, and supporters,

March is here and so is a new Charity of the Month!  The Modified Dolls and our chapters have so many great events coming up to support National MS Society all month long.  Be sure to check back later this month for our posts with important information about National MS Society and on our events around the United States and United Kingdom supporting those battling Multiple Sclerosis.  National MS Society is near and dear to my heart since my youngest sister has Multiple Sclerosis.  I’m armed and ready to build awareness, raise some money for research, and make a difference for those living with MS, like my sister.  Are you?

Also coming later this month, you’ll meet our March Doll of the Month, Selene V, and see how The Modified Dolls and our chapters made a difference for The Marfan Foundation.

Our new website is coming along nicely.  We are anticipating it being live later this month.  On it, visitors will be able to apply to be a Doll, check out our event schedule, make donations directly to us (remember…we are a 501(c)(3) public charity, so your donations are tax deductible!), and view our financial documents.  And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

As always, please be sure to check out our social media links in our side bar to find news and info from all of our chapters.  We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you out at our events!

Sincerely,

Kara ‘Hysteria‘ Scott

OREGON CHAPTER

On January 18th, the Oregon Modified Dolls took a road trip to Wolf Haven International in Tenino, WA to volunteer and take a tour. The Washington Dolls were able to join them.  They sanded down signs and posts, varnished them, moved decorations around so that they could paint their building, cleaned some signs and cleared up some debris (branches and twigs) in visitor areas. The Oregon Dolls & Washington Dolls symbolically adopted 3 wolves, Klondike, Mehina, and Gypsy. AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!

LOUISIANA CHAPTER

February 7th the Louisiana Dolls teamed up with Sailor’s Cross Tattoo & Gallery for a really fun event to benefit NAMI New Orleans!  Bear and Rachel from Sailor’s Cross offered seasonal flash for $40 and the Louisiana Modified Dolls received 40% of the cost of each tattoo for our charity of the month.  They also had several local musicians and artists come out to perform in the courtyard outside of Sailor’s Cross.  We had a tabled filled to the brim with goodies including chips, soda, sandwiches and king cake and offered four different raffle baskets including a booze basket, $100 gift certificate to Sailor’s Cross, and a Mega Basket—you name it, it was in there– stickers, cups, posters, incense, gift certificates, a Mardi Gras crown, a vet visit, AND MORE!  Representatives from NAMI New Orleans came out to show their support and gratitude for what the Louisiana Dolls were doing and invited them to stop by to take a tour and find out more about all the wonderful things they’re doing in the community. Nineteen tattoos were permanently etched for charity and they couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout…or the weather!  They were able to raise a little over $700 for NAMI New Orleans while enjoying every minute of it!  It was a beautiful day, with some beautiful tattooed ladies, for a beautiful cause…who could ask for more!?!

February Doll of the Month

Each month we feature a different member of our organization.  Our Doll of the Month for February 2015:

MRS. O’LEARY DOLL

10928620_10153158119901162_1417699624_n

*In my best Mrs. Doubtfire voice * Hellllooooooooooo, my name is Amber O’Leary and I’m Mrs. O’Leary Doll, the Head Doll for the Louisiana Chapter of the Modified Dolls! I live in Marrero, LA which is a suburb on the Westbank of New Orleans. Learn more about Marrero here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCS72s41Cgc, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvh5KeZ-85A, AND here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsVfWHPq3ng! I’m living my dream, working in radio broadcasting as an associate producer for WWL and 3WL radio stations.
I joined TMD in January of 2013 and hit the ground running. In this short period of time I’ve had too many wonderful experiences to count. It’s hard for me to explain why this organization is so special and just what it means to me…so I asked for a little help. I blindly prompted my group to tell me what their time as a Doll has been like and here are excerpts from their musings:

“I joined The Louisiana Modified Dolls in June 2014 and life has been a joyous, frantic, and amazingly rewarding thrill-ride ever since. I have found a family of women who share triumphs, tears and laughter in a way that I once thought was closed to me. Though our mission is to try to enrich the lives of others, the life that has really been enriched is mine. I want to be the best person I can – not only for my local, national and global community, but for the women I hold so dear -those crazy painted and pierced ladies. Sometimes irreverent, but always looking for the good. How rare. How precious. How lucky I am.” – Adamantium Doll, River Ridge, LA
“It’s a wonderful group to be a part of with some loving and dedicated women who devote a lot of time to charity. It’s definitely a sisterhood and one I’m proud to be a part of!” –VooDoo Doll, Kenner, LA
“Although I had been volunteering on my own at the time, working alongside these committed, intelligent women inspired me far beyond anything I had done alone. Every cause we adopt becomes dear to me and my sisters; every effort to support those in need is embraced by all of us in unity. There is no time for judgment, apathy or conflict, not while there’s so much work to be done in this world. The passion for making a difference in the community, the genuine friendships, and the sincerity within our group is something rarely experienced in our society, and it is truly a treasure to find myself amongst such beautiful modified women doing our best to make the world a better, brighter place.” –Googie Doll, Hammond, LA
“One amazing thing that I have learned about being a Doll in our chapter is we are small in number but very powerful. We have nine amazing, talented, outgoing, big hearted women. I couldn’t be more honored to be a Louisiana modified doll.” –CoCo-licious Doll, Thibodaux, LA
“Being a Louisiana Modified Doll has affected my whole life in many ways. I’ve never known a group of more positive, supportive women, and I’m honored to be a part of it. I’ve also never felt like such a contributor not only to charity but also to society in general as we negate stereotypes. All of those things have helped me to become more comfortable with who I am and how I express myself, how I socialize with people, and just a more positive person overall.” –Sunshine Doll, Hammond, LA
“I’m hoping I can get more involved not just with the dolls, but other charity opportunities around Shreveport.” –Phynyx Doll, Shreveport, LA
“It has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my adult life, I do believe. It IS about the charities we come together for. I truly feel that being a Modified Doll makes me a better me. These women beside me in this group make me a better me. Our body modifications may have brought us together, but it’s our hearts that truly hold us together. That desire to give back to the world in whatever way we can is what holds us together. I took a leap of faith when I headed into this organization, and it has been continuously rewarding in so many ways. I am truly passionate about what we do and who we are, and I plan to always be a Modified Doll.” –Biddy Boo Doll, Thibodaux, LA
“By myself I’m an artistic person, one who enjoys all forms of art and artistic expression. So tattoos and all forms of body modifications are something that resonated with me since a young age. I’m also the kind of person that loves to do things for others just as much as I love to do things for myself, and since I fricken love myself, I fricken love to help people. A lot. Like ,a lot a lot. So, when I 1st joined the dolls this was my 1st motive…I didn’t really expect to find out more about myself. What naive thinking. I should have known better, we never stop learning. I learned there was a teeny tiny bit of me that was ever so slightly distressed by the way people might judge me for my appearance. BUT through the dolls, when I have those few run-ins with cute tattoo rad chick nah sayers, I can tell them proudly about what I do. I’ve even found out that more often than not it’s just a misconception and through curious conversation they become interested in what we do and that’s mega fulfilling! I also learned that despite years at an all-girl catholic school, other women are not in fact the devil. I love, love, love being a doll for the good I can do for others, the good I can do for myself, and to be a part of a hopefully growing group of women!” –Chibi Doll, Metairie, LA

These smart, talented, beautiful, amazing, charitable, women with hearts made of gold are The Louisiana Modified Dolls and they each represent what makes this organization so very special and why I continue to dedicate my time and pour my heart into everything we do. If you get to know them, you get to know me. We are more than a non-profit made up of tattooed and pierced women…we are SISTERS. We are sisters set out on a mission of spreading love and good-will across the globe while having FUN. It’s charity with a twist…a crazy, colorful, metal laden twist! And I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

February 2015 Charity of the Month – The Marfan Foundation

Each month, The Modified Dolls and our Chapters support a different 501(c)(3) organization through fundraising, voluntarism, and building awareness.

Since 1981, The Marfan Foundation has led the fight to victory for those affected by Marfan Syndrome and its related disorders.  Until the formation of The Marfan Foundation, Marfan Syndrome was widely unknown and misunderstood.  The Marfan Foundation works to inform the public and the medical community with the most accurate and up to date information and advance lifesaving treatments to improve the quality of like for those with Marfan Syndrome.

Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. Connective tissue holds all the body’s cells, organs and tissue together. It also plays an important role in helping the body grow and develop properly.  Marfan Syndrome may affect different parts of the body for different people and its signs are different for each person.  Evidence of Marfan Syndrome is most often found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints, and eyes, while the lungs, skin and nervous system may also be affected.  Some signs are easy to see, such as long arms, legs and fingers, tall and thin body type, curved spine, chest sinks in or sticks out, flexible joints, flat feet, crowded teeth, or stretch marks on the skin that are not due to weight gain or loss.  Other signs may not be as obvious and may make early diagnosis more difficult.  These signs may include heart problems, especially those related to the aorta, sudden lung collapse and eye problems, including severe nearsightedness, dislocated lens, detached retina, early glaucoma, and early cataracts.

February is Marfan Awareness Month and The Modified Dolls are using the opportunity to help The Marfan Foundation bring awareness to Marfan Syndrome and its related disorders and ask for your assistance.  To help, you can simply share posts from The Marfan Foundation’s Facebook page with #MarfanAwareness.  Other ways to help:

Ms Click on Marfan Syndrome

Ms Click is a very active member of The Modified Dolls Texas Chapter.  She has Marfan Syndrome, and since our Charity of the Month for February is The Marfan Foundation, she’d like to share her story with you:

10961827_10204812553184877_1343564445_n

“My mother passed away when I was 13 days old due to an aneurysm of the heart caused by Marfans. It was always believed that I too had Marfans, but there is no “test” for it… at least none that insurances will pay for testing your chromosomes. I started have super bad chest pains and shortness of breath, and palpitations in Oct of 1996. The Dr. I worked for told me I was having anxiety attacks, so they gave me anxiety medicine. It didn’t go away. He decided with my family history it couldn’t hurt to have an echocardiogram of my heart. They told me that everything looked ok, but my dad was not ok with the fact that my aorta was slightly enlarged (it was supposed to be 2.5 cm, it was 5.5 cm), back then surgery wasn’t until 6.1 cm. So they said they’d monitor it. A week later, I found out I was pregnant at the age of 20 and was super excited. LONG story short, I had to medically terminate the pregnancy, b/c my heart was already working double time (hence the chest pains, shortness of breath, and palpitations). Practically kicking and screaming, I did what the Dr’s ordered me to do… and I got VERY sick, my body was mad at me, and I was mad at me. That was in December (so I was only 11 weeks when I “medically terminated” the pregnancy… they say it that way so it doesn’t sound as bad. Though I still feel like a piece of me died that day). I had an IUD put in in Jan. because the Dr. told me that my heart wouldn’t be strong enough to ever carry full term.  February rolls around and I was still having chest pains…though the Dr thought is was psychosomatic b/c I was still very depressed about the abortion. End of February they sent me to a surgeon b/c they thought they “saw something different” in my results. I went on a Friday. The Dr was the same Dr. that had done my moms surgery 20 years before that. They said that it wasn’t surgery rate yet, and we should wait. My dad said we weren’t leaving until the surgery was scheduled. I was schedule for that following Monday (3 days later). He told my dad that he would fly a Dr. in from Houston and he understood if he didn’t want him doing the surgery. My dad said he trusted him fully. They went in to do the surgery and had already torn through the 2 most inner layers of my aorta (you only have 3 layers… so basically a sneeze could have killed me). My dad saved my life. Not the Dr.’s

10966874_10204812553224878_5134400_n

The point to this is, Marfans is no joke. Most women who have it do not know until it is too late, and most die during child birth due to the strain on the heart. It is also common in athletes. You see them dropping on the court due to an aneurysm. It is somewhat of a silent killer.”

We’re very excited here in Doll-land right now because our website will soon have a new look. In addition to new pages and features, our site will house an electronic form for applying to be a Doll and more info about our Charities of the Month and our Official Chapters. You’ll get to see photos of our events and find this blog right on our website. As always, make sure to browse our Facebook page and other social media listed in our sidebar for events near you.

From here in Chicago, I wish you a safe and warm February. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Kara ‘Hysteria‘ Scott
