March 2015 Charity of the Month – National MS Society

Each month, The Modified Dolls and our Official Chapters support a different 501(c)(3) organization through fundraising, voluntarism, and raising awareness. All of March, we are supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

National MS Society

Multiple Sclerosis means ‘many scars’. In MS patients, the immune system has an abnormal response that is directed toward the central nervous system, made up of the brain, spinal chord, and optic nerves. The immune system attacks myelin, which is the fatty substance surrounding nerve fibers. When the myelin or nerve fibers become damaged, signals become distorted or interrupted, causing the symptoms of MS. The damaged myelin forms scars, which gives Multiple Sclerosis its name.

There are four types of MS: Relapsing-remitting, secondary-progressive, primary-progressive, and progressive-relapsing. Relapsing-remitting is the most common type of MS and most people with relapsing-remitting MS will eventually transition to secondary-progressive.

MS symptoms vary for each patient. Those afflicted may experience severe fatigue, numbness and tingling, spasticity, walking difficulties, and vision problems, among many other symptoms.

The National MS Society works to create a world free of Multiple Sclerosis. Through professional education, advocacy, research, and programs and services for those with MS, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society strives to keep each person with MS moving. Please visit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s website or Facebook page for more information.
