March 2015 Charity of the Month – National MS Society

Each month, The Modified Dolls and our Official Chapters support a different 501(c)(3) organization through fundraising, voluntarism, and raising awareness. All of March, we are supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

National MS Society

Multiple Sclerosis means ‘many scars’. In MS patients, the immune system has an abnormal response that is directed toward the central nervous system, made up of the brain, spinal chord, and optic nerves. The immune system attacks myelin, which is the fatty substance surrounding nerve fibers. When the myelin or nerve fibers become damaged, signals become distorted or interrupted, causing the symptoms of MS. The damaged myelin forms scars, which gives Multiple Sclerosis its name.

There are four types of MS: Relapsing-remitting, secondary-progressive, primary-progressive, and progressive-relapsing. Relapsing-remitting is the most common type of MS and most people with relapsing-remitting MS will eventually transition to secondary-progressive.

MS symptoms vary for each patient. Those afflicted may experience severe fatigue, numbness and tingling, spasticity, walking difficulties, and vision problems, among many other symptoms.

The National MS Society works to create a world free of Multiple Sclerosis. Through professional education, advocacy, research, and programs and services for those with MS, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society strives to keep each person with MS moving. Please visit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s website or Facebook page for more information. Also, visit our website and Central Organization’s Facebook page to find events in your area that support the Society.

Pennsylvania Doll, Thirteen, lost her very best friend. Fester was a bull terrier who had been with Thirteen for nearly two decades. She and Fester did everything together and had a bond most people don’t have the pleasure of experiencing. Fester was not just a dog, but a savior to many. He had the pleasure of meeting children from tough situations, who found solace in him, since he was also from a tough situation.  Thirteen may have saved Fester from being put down so many years ago, but she had made it apparent that they very much saved each other. Thirteen is an amazing tattoo artist and will be doing $50 flash art at her Manheim, PA tattoo studio.  Proceeds will benefit the Blue Ridge Bull Terrier Rescue in honor and remembrance of her very best friend.

March 2015 Letter From the President

Dear friends, fans, and supporters,

March is here and so is a new Charity of the Month!  The Modified Dolls and our chapters have so many great events coming up to support National MS Society all month long.  Be sure to check back later this month for our posts with important information about National MS Society and on our events around the United States and United Kingdom supporting those battling Multiple Sclerosis.  National MS Society is near and dear to my heart since my youngest sister has Multiple Sclerosis.  I’m armed and ready to build awareness, raise some money for research, and make a difference for those living with MS, like my sister.  Are you?

Also coming later this month, you’ll meet our March Doll of the Month, Selene V, and see how The Modified Dolls and our chapters made a difference for The Marfan Foundation.

Our new website is coming along nicely.  We are anticipating it being live later this month.  On it, visitors will be able to apply to be a Doll, check out our event schedule, make donations directly to us (remember…we are a 501(c)(3) public charity, so your donations are tax deductible!), and view our financial documents.  And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

As always, please be sure to check out our social media links in our side bar to find news and info from all of our chapters.  We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you out at our events!

Sincerely,

Kara ‘Hysteria‘ Scott
